FROM THE SKY THE EARTH CAN SEE BETTER

Stefano Salvi

Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia

The earth we walk upon seem to stand still and motionless, an important reference in our daily lives. In fact, various geological processes generate movements of the earth's surface at various spatial and temporal scales, often imperceptible. Today, these phenomena are studied with radar satellites orbiting high in the upper atmosphere, as the Italians COSMO-SkyMed, able to measure ground movements of a few millimeters. We'll see how they work and what scientific advances are generating.
